Anne Rice returns to her wonderful characters of the dark and mistery that we have all grown to love in The Wolf Gift. Written in her usual amazing flare. Filled with great multi-dimensional characters whom we can't help but fall in love with.
We meet Reuben, our protagonist and one of our "cubs". A wonderful complex character who's struggles with coming to terms with what he has become only endears him to us. Asking questions which we have all asked at one point or another. And, if you haven't, you will after reading this book.
Stuart, the other young, exuberant "cub" of our story. Stuart is young and curious. Also impatient, as the young are, with an enthusiasm to learn and be himself. And, one great gay character that captures the personality of gay youth completely.
We also fall in love for the original owner of Nideck Point and his friends. Characters whose allure is "moth to a flame" like. Not only to the characters but to the reader. And, all this, before we even meet them
But, the people are not the only characters in this written wonder. The house, Nideck Point, is very much as alive as the individuals who reside within. Anne Rice knows how to bring the cities and homes of her characters to life. And this home is no exception. She brings it to life in her usual way that one can't help but live, love and explore it with as much desire as the characters.
The delicate and beautiful way in which the book flows is amazing. The way Anne weaves in and out of dramatic, humorous and intense scenes is one of a kind. Sometimes finding all three in one. We find the struggle for acceptance, for love, for redemption...a place to just fit in, so heartfelt with in these pages. Just so well written. I think that Anne Rice wrote it best in the book itself when she writtes,
"We all need love, don't we, even the worst killers, the worst animals! We all need love."
It is definitely a book I recommend everyone to pick-up.
Beautyfully written...amazing landscapes and characters which leaves one wanting to meet and befriend. Just another Anne Rice master piece.
But, do NOT take my word for it, you must read it for yourself. ;-D
On a more personal note: I think I would scream and jump for joy if in the second or third book, the Talamasca is mentioned. It would mean that it all takes place in the same universe as the Vampire Chronicles and the Mayfair Witches. But, that is just my wishful thinking.
